An Au Pair is a student who leaves their country in order to improve their knowledge of a foreign language and to experience living with an English family. An Au pair is expected to help mainly with the children, babysitting, helping with the children, preparing meals. Keeping their rooms tidy, taking them to and from school. In addition they are expected to help around in the home with light household duties such as dusting, vacuuming, ironing, bed making and cooking.
The Au Pair will receive a sum of money, normally somewhere in the region of £80.00-£100.00 per week. Her/His working day will vary, but normally be in the region of 5 hours per day. Free time is usually one to two days per week, free time for English classes, plus several evenings by arrangement with the host family. Hours and pocket money do vary from family to family and area to area. Host families must provide all the information regarding duties, free time and pocket money. Au Pairs usually come over for 12 months, however 6 month placement and summer holiday placements are becoming ever more popular.
We do not advise to have an Au Pair for children under 4yrs old unless someone is at home all the time and is wanting the Au Pair to be just that extra pair of hands. Please remember that all Au pairs need a little time to settle into a new family and to become accustomed to a new environment, different foods, new customs etc .
Most Au Pairs take the opportunity of improving their language skills whilst staying with a family. The host family will help the Au Pair too enrol in a suitable language school although the Au Pair pays for it. The Au Pair also pays for their travel costs to and from the UK.
